PLANNING AND BUILDING FOR RESILIENCE
Environment/Natural Resources Task Force Event, October 25th 2022

Climate change is upon us, whether we like it or not. Temperature records are now broken routinely, and so-called 100-year weather events seem to be arriving ahead of schedule. We need only to look to the recent news from Florida to know that old ways of thinking about risk, cost, and design are obsolete. We may, indeed, have time to head off even more profound outcomes by cutting emissions and reducing net carbon, but this discussion is not about averting such a scenario. Those of us who plan and build face unprecedented challenges, not tomorrow, but today. “Resilience” is a term that has emerged to frame this new reality of coping with change.

What should “resilience” mean to us? How can we make it a part of our work as professionals, public officials, and citizens? We’ve got a great panel lined up on October 25th to help us better understand resilience and make it the new cornerstone of our practices.

Guest Presenters:
Susan Alvarez is the Assistant Director of the Office of Environmental Quality & Sustainability at the City of Dallas. She’s a leader in establishing measures and best practices related to climate change planning for a major city. Along with Susan, we’ve asked Kimberly Miller, Principal Planner for Resilience at Halff & Associates in Fort Worth to speak and take questions. Her planning practice works to integrate land use, design, and infrastructure to mitigate the downsides of climate change.

Please join us live at Halff & Associates Headquarters at 1201 N.Bowser, Richardson TX from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 25th, or join us online via TEAMS. We’ll have breakfast and coffee to facilitate networking and robust conversation.
