Urban Design Task Force: The Transformation of Historic Downtown Ennis

Organized by the Greater Dallas Planning Council Urban Design Committee and AIA Dallas Historic Resources Committee

Like many smaller historic Texas railway towns that have declined since their heyday in the early 20th century, the City of Ennis struggled to retain downtown as the economic hub after the construction of I-45. Ennis developed a Master Plan with an economic plan and revitalization vision for the historic downtown that directs public and private investment.

By 2020, downtown Ennis has been transformed by building rehabilitations, streetscape design, pedestrian connectivity, and flexibility to promote and support a variety of retail, restaurant, entertainment, and residential uses. Dallas Street is the initial catalyst project from the Master Plan that eliminates barriers to private develop by providing infrastructure upgrades, accessible access to every building, and activates the previously underutilized alleys.
